UNITED MICRO KINGDOMS, 2012/13

With rapid development of science and technology, people may be confused about that what the world will be like in the future. At the same time, different combinations of diversified technology, culture and ideology also can lead the world to different directions. By devolving England into four different countries(Digitatians, the Communo-nuclearist society, the Anarcho-evolutionists and Bioliberals), this project called UMK is used to explore the cultural and ethical impact of existing and new technologies and how they alter the way we live.

Different from a science-fiction aesthetic, design maybe can bring something new to conversations about alternative futures. Through materials and form, ideas also become available for people's aesthetic reception. In this project, Dunne and Raby use the designed object as a sort of materialized form of discourse, and tried to expose trade-offs: convenience versus control, individual freedom versus hardship, and unlimited energy versus a limited population

Four different counties represent four different ways of living, and bring different results. Maybe, Dunne and Raby don’t give a clear answer about what the world will be like in the future, but this project leads us to think about different situations of our daily life in the future, and how we should do and choose to give us a good future.
